Why a support group program for carers of people with disability in NSW?


The together: Support groups for carers of people with a disability in NSW program came about through Stronger Together 2. An unmet need was identified for a coordinated, state-wide network of peer support groups for carers of people living with disability.

The together program looks at meeting the need for a network of support groups for carers of people with disability across NSW. This network will be a peer support resource that will connect carers with each other.

 

What is a support group for carers of people with disability?


Support groups for carers of people with disability usually consist of a group of people who provide unpaid care to their family members or friends who live with disability. A support group for carers of people living with disability usually consist of just carers so that they can openly discuss their caring situation and have some ‘time out’ from caring.


Carers often exchange tips and advice on how to deal with varying situations as knowledge within groups often includes awareness of local services.
